The Swamp Cypress, Taxodium distichum is often associated with the mangrove swamps of the American Everglades. Like the European Larch It is one of the few deciduous conifers found growing in Britain. The Swamp Cypress is a popular tree for Bonsai.
In autumn, its fine, feathery needles are shed just after they produce a stunning display of seasonal red foliage. Taxodium distichum was first introduced to Britain in 1640 by the famous plant hunter John Tradescant.
Its popularity as an ornamental tree in parks and larger gardens was soon established and it was much in demand for planting by lakes, rivers and streams and any location with with damp soil or access to water. Whilst Swamp Cypress can survive perfectly well without water being nearby, it certainly thrives where it is wetter and warmer.
The current height of the trees is approximately 30-50cm and they can be planted out all year round.
