Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is one of the hardiest evergreen hedges and is becoming increasingly popular.  Western Hemlock's has a high tolerance for shade; it is often planted as an under-storey. It will grow well on a wide range of soils, except chalk.

Western Hemlock needs a good supply of moisture and planting is normally confined to western areas. It even survives low temperatures and it is generally intolerant of exposure. For these reasons, in wetter, western areas Western Hemlock tends to be planted on similar sites to Douglas Fir along sheltered valleys. 

The current height of these trees is 15-30cm and can be planted out all year round.
