The Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica purpurea) tree is very similar to the Green Beech but produces beautiful purple (copper) leaves from spring through to autumn. If allowed it will grow into a large tree, reaching 15ft in 10 years. Both Copper Beech trees as well as Copper Beech hedging benefit hugely from plenty of rain or hand watering until established.
The Copper Beech is commonly planted as a hedge but also makes a graceful parkland or larger garden tree.
As a guidance for hedging - For a single row hedge plant at a rate of 4 trees per metre. For a staggered double row (zig zag) hedge plant at a rate of 6 trees per metre. A tip is to include a stretch or several of Copper Beech hedging in a Green Beech hedge - we would recommend a minimum of 1 metre of Copper Beech ie either 4 or 6 plants planted in a block so they don't get drowned out by the Green Beech.
The current height of the trees is approximately 30-50cm and they can be planted out all year round.
